[joo-buh-ley-shuhn] noun: a joyful or festive celebration.
Well, that's exactly what we Opus-ians did on the evening of 7th January, 2011 at Friends & Bacchus, Bangalore, to celebrate our 12th glorious anniversary!
First, a warning – Opus is an emotionally charged place. I'm not saying we are human hosepipes, but there have been numerous occasions when we have choked with affection for each other. Anyone who has worked for us (or worked with us) knows that we’re not an organization – we're a family.
In fact, the celebration was made special by the presence and participation of our extended family. Brigadier Suryanarayanan (who has brought and kept us together), HLP (whose enthusiasm towards Opus makes us want to reciprocate by singing to him… at least sometimes), Ryan (co-founder and photographer extraordinaire, whose stories and pictures are both so incredibly beautiful) and Raju (for whom work always comes first, especially if it’s got to do with Opus).
Then there was us - the Marketing Team - who have mastered the art of pushing deadlines and persuading people into believing it’s a good idea; Operations, who work very hard to not make work hard; the Creative Team, whose overflowing 'juices' are especially powerful when cursing late-nights and commitment; and of course, the Management, who teach us to 'never leave a job to others,’ ironically, and would find that irony exceedingly funny.
What a night it was! Reliving memories like never before, with some good wine flowing, great food keeping our spirits up and conversations that cannot be remembered (well yeah, I was happy and gay that night. Some colleagues at one point suddenly woke us to say "God bless us all, amen." Apparently, they were happy and gay, too).
Few hours after all this, Nagesh and Som announced that there would be an awards ceremony (excellent! I had my speech ready…) I realised something that night – there are employees who get into trouble and get out. There are those who get into trouble and have a scapegoat in mind to take the blame. And there are those who stay calm when the crisis is building. Some call this bravery, others stupidity. And so it was these stupid…er…brave people who won the awards (I am very bitter). We still love you, though, so congrats Anumodh, Faisal, Mani and Gowda!
Opus is one place where people live the saying, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” And there are none tougher than Nagesh and Som and the folks who have contributed way beyond words can possibly explain.
When you attach a great deal of meaning to something, and when you have a strong sense of meaning attached to what you are doing, you bring more of your attention and energy to it. That’s what Opus means to me. One’s experience of work is beyond a paycheck at Opus. You can choose to discover rewards beyond monetary gain, and always aim to achieve higher and learn more. So here’s raising a glass to many more rewarding years for Opus!
